Ana Belaval


From the high wire to wake boarding, there is not much Ana hasn’t tried once as the “Around Town” reporter for the WGN Morning News. Ana, a three-time Emmy Award winner, enjoys bringing a slice of Chicago life to viewers each morning as she previews notable attractions, people, activities and uncovers some of Chicago’s best-kept secrets.


Ana joined WGN in 2005 from Univision – one of few Spanish reporters to cross over to the English broadcast market. At Univision, Ana began as a general assignment reporter and weekend anchor for the Chicago affiliate and worked her way up to network correspondent based in New York and substitute host for Univision’s national morning show, “Despierta America”.


She came to Chicago to fulfill her dream of broadcasting in the general market while still proudly representing her Puerto Rican heritage. Since joining WGN, Ana has also worked as a substitute anchor for the Morning and Midday News and as a general assignment reporter. A three-time Emmy winner and six-time Emmy nominee, she received awards for her “Living Green” , “One Tank Trips” series and  the community affairs show “Adelante Chicago”. She was also a finalist for the Peter Lisagor award for the special story, “” ?


When Ana is not out and about in Chicago for the Morning News, she can also be seen onstage doing stand-up comedy. After performing stand-up for the first time for a Chicago celebrity event at Zanie’s, Ana received so many laughs that she continues to write and perform comedy sets at various Chicago area venues such as Zanie’s, Joe’s on Weed Street, The Mayne Stage, Wilmette Theater and Teatro at The Center.


In addition, she is the host of the new Chicago Stand Up Project on WTTW – a documentary-style show featuring two well-known Chicagoans who try their hand at stand-up comedy.


Off camera and off-stage, Ana enjoys spending time with her family including her husband, Steve, daughter Amelia, and frequent Skype sessions with her parents in Puerto Rico. Her adventures in parenting led her to create a “mommy blog,” through which to share her joys and trials of motherhood. That blog blossomed into the popular “Ay Mama” blog at www.chicagonow/aymama featuring the musings of seven accomplished mothers including Belaval. Ana w as also the host for the web radio show for “Ay, Mama!” on


Ana received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from American University in Washington D.C. Ana is involved with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation’s Dancing with Chicago Celebrities created by Arthur Murray Dance Studios and the H.A.S. Postpartum Program.
